• Airworthiness certificates are issued to aircraft only by the FAA or authorized representatives of the FAA.
  • Certificates are given based on two primary categories: Standard Airworthiness Certificate and Special Airworthiness Certificate.
  • Certification is dependent on an aircraft's ability to operate safely within specific parameters, requirements, and limitations.

If you own, operate, or are just starting to learn about aircraft, you have probably come across airworthiness certificates. But what exactly is this certificate, and why is it important?

To put it simply, an airworthiness certificate is a document issued by the FAA that declares an aircraft fit to fly. In the United States, this certification is managed primarily by Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR), Part 21.

What Does an Airworthiness Certificate Mean?

An airworthiness certificate shows an aircraft’s ability to operate safely, within the parameters, requirements, and limitations that are relevant to its certification.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) maintains two main classification categories:

  • Standard Airworthiness Certificate
  • Special Airworthiness Certificate

A standard airworthiness certificate usually refers to a type-certificated aircraft that is used for operations such as normal, utility, acrobatic, commuter, or transport. This certificate stays valid for as long as the aircraft can manage to conform to its approved type design and can maintain its airworthy condition.

A special airworthiness certificate is given to aircraft that are not elligible for a standard certificate or that fall into certain certification categories.

Some examples of special certificates include:

  • Experimental aircraft – such as homebuilt plane or a plane built for testing or development
  • Amateur-built aircraft – built for an individual’s research, education, or recreation
  • Light-sport aircraft – small, lightweight, with a 2-person capacity
  • Restricted-category aircraft – aircraft used for spraying, surveillance, or firefighting
  • Primary-category aircraft – basic, low-performing personal or training aircraft with up to 4 seats
  • Certain limited or provisional aircraft – this can be for flight crew training, demonstration, and service testing

Special certificates often come with specific operating limitations. Factors such as restrictions on where, why, and how they can be flown.

How Do You Get an Airworthiness Certificate?

Generally, an aircraft must first be registered properly. Then, an application must be submitted. After this, the FAA will determine if the aircraft is eligible for an airworthiness certificate and cleared for safe operation. You can submit your application through the FAA’s Airworthiness Certification system or using FAA Form 8130-6.

Airworthiness certificates can only be granted by authorized FAA personnel or authorized representatives of the FAA.

Is an Airworthiness Certificate Important?

An airworthiness certificate is a critical element of any legal aircraft operating documentation. It indicates that the aircraft meets any relevant FAA airworthiness requirements for its specific certification category.

That said, obtaining a certificate doesn’t guarantee an aircraft’s status for perpetuity. An aircraft must maintain all corresponding standards and prove its airworthy condition on an ongoing basis. Failure to do so can result in the FAA’s revoking a certificate if safety conditions are not being met.

Final Thoughts

An airworthiness certificate is an authorization issued by the FAA that proves an aircraft’s ability to fly safely. Whether an aircraft will be granted a standard certificate or special one will depend on its design, certification category, and proposed use. Knowing about airworthiness certificates is an integral step for anyone wanting to undertand aircraft ownership, operation, and aviation regulations.
